First Family Enjoys First Wittfest

A day-long celebration culminating with a performance by the band White Panda, Wittenberg's annual Wittfest, April 27, provided opportunities for all ages, including Laurie M. Joyner and her family, to enjoy the day. From early afternoon inflatable games for families to a series of concerts, Wittfest 2013 proved as memorable as ever.

President Throws First Pitch

Following serving as honorary team captain a week earlier, President Laurie M. Joyner donned a Tiger cap again, April 27, as she threw out the first pitch in the pre-game ceremonies for the baseball game against DePauw.

Open Office Hours Facilitate Key Conversations

Encouraging continual dialogue and engagement throughout her administration, President Laurie M. Joyner again hosted open office hours for members of the campus community, April 9. The 2-hour timeslot was for staff this time wherein individuals are invited to stop by to say hello and/or share their concerns or ideas.

Outgoing Student Senate Members Enjoy Dinner

Representing all facets of the student experience at Wittenberg, the university’s Student Senate annually provides direction, leadership, and dedicated service to the institution. To thank the 2012-2013 senators for their generosity of time and pivotal leadership during her first year, President Laurie M. Joyner hosted a special dinner in Senate’s honor, April 9.

Parents Executive Committee and Alumni Board Receive Update

During a joint meeting of the Alumni Board and Parents Executive Committee, April 12, President Laurie M. Joyner reviewed progress to-date on securing a sustainable financial model and on the external forces impacting multiple institutions in higher education and within the liberal arts. Joyner also engaged in a question-and-answer session with the groups following her presentation.

President Awards Medal of Honor During Annual Convocation

Tied this year to the first-ever “Liberal Arts in Action: A Celebration of Learning,” Wittenberg’s Honors Convocation, April 12, annually recognizes the academic achievements of students and faculty. This year’s convocation distinguished itself even more, however, as the university’s highest non-academic award, the Wittenberg Medal of Honor, was presented to 1934 alumnus and accomplished attorney and judge, The Hon. William A. McClain.

Sociology Class Enjoys Guest Lecturer

A sociologist, President Laurie M. Joyner was honored to present the Alpha Kappa Delta International Honor Society Lecture, April 13, to the sociology department. Her lecture concluded the inaugural “Liberal Arts in Action: A Celebration of Learning” and provided and opportunity for engagement with students and faculty in the department.

Art Exhibit Leads to New Décor

On April 13, the university community enjoyed a chance to view the work of graduating seniors in the Wittenberg Department of Art. President Laurie M. Joyner was among those in attendance and even purchased a piece by Lauren Houser ’13, who plans to pursue a career in graphic design.

Milestone Career Moments Honored at Administrative Luncheon

To honor dedicated service to Wittenberg, President Laurie M. Joyner hosted an Administrative Luncheon, April 17.

Those recognized this year for five years of service included:  Stephanie Clark, advancement; Fetneh Ghavami, SCE; Kathy McKee, Health Center; Jeff Roope, athletics; Sean Ross, athletics; Travis Schwab, athletics; and Wendy Smiseck, career services.

President Hears Students’ Concerns During Sit-In

On April 17, more than 30 students representing organizations in Wittenberg’s McClain Center for Diversity held a sit-in inside Recitation Hall to share candidly with Provost Duncan, Interim Dean of Students Stevens, and President Laurie M. Joyner their concerns relative to a lack of support for minority students institution-wide. Dialogue continues as the administration partners with these students in ensuring an inclusive community for all.
