FYE Support Series

The FYE Support Series is a comprehensive series of programming that facilitates a first-year student’s transition to Wittenberg and their development of skills, habits, and attitudes essential to success at Wittenberg. Through the sessions and presentations, students will gain new ideas and skills that will not only assist them in their coursework, but also in their personal development and in the quality of their interactions with other students and the community at large.

Supplemental Instruction

Developed by Dr. Deanna Martin in 1973 at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic assistance program that increases student performance and retention.  The SI program provides regularly scheduled, out-of-class, peer facilitated sessions.  The SI sessions are open to all students in the class and are attended on a voluntary basis.

English 101

During their first-year, students take ENGL 101 in order to achieve a level of competency in writing that provides the necessary foundation for subsequent college work and further learning.  ENGL 101 introduces students to basic forms and conventions of college writing, provides the opportunity for frequent practice in writing and revising, and helps students explore various stages of the writing process from planning to proofreading.

Igniting the Spark

Igniting the Spark is a new first-year experience program that is being piloted in some of the WittSem classes. Teams of Wittenberg professional staff are assigned to a WittSem class and present in-class workshops designed to help first-year students get started on the process of identifying who they want to be, the character strengths and qualities they wish to develop, and what they wish to accomplish and contribute to the community

Social Development

Wittenberg strives to create and to develop a community of learners – an environment where students can engage fully in the learning process.  Most students come to college with fears and uncertainty – fears of failing tests or not fitting in with peers.  Being afraid to ask questions, express opinions, or join group discussions can greatly hinder a student's learning.  A community of learners is a place that supports inquiry and helps students generate ideas.
