A Profile of the Geology Department

Take a look at what past grads from Witt have done with their majors – internships, grad school programs, and first jobs after graduation.  It’s not always as cut and dried as you think; a Liberal Arts degree has a lot of flexibility!
Geology

Diverse study

The study of geology is as varied as the careers of geologists. Geology deals with the study of earth materials, such as minerals and rocks; oil and natural gas, and water; earth processes, such as plate tectonics, volcanic eruptions and streams; and earth history. Professional geologists:

  • study past earth history and predict the future behavior of earth systems, such as plate tectonic or river systems;
  • explore for adequate supplies of natural resources, such as ground water, petroleum and economic metals
  • provide geotechnical expertise related to site assessment and develop watershed protection plans;
  • work with planning and emergency management to mitigate human suffering and property loss from natural hazards, such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods, landslides and coastal erosion; and
  • mediate between the human demand for natural resources and the impact that resource development has on the natural environment.

We work in diverse sectors of the economy, including industry and business as exploration geologists and environmental consultants, academics as teachers and research scientists, and government as natural resource or natural hazard specialists.

We’ve designed a program of study at Wittenberg that is flexible enough to address interests in any of the sub-disciplines of geology, environmental science and earth science and for careers in any of the different employment sectors.
