Our major prepares students for careers in accounting.  This takes in many possibilities: Students can pursue careers with corporations or service industries, the government, non-profit organizations, or choose self-employment.  Courses in financial, managerial and cost accounting, federal taxation, advanced accounting and auditing provide the background needed for your successful career.

Outstanding opportunities for practical, hands-on experience are available at Wittenberg.  Wittenberg has partnered with many local businesses to provide internships for majors.  These experiences are available at local and national businesses, banks, marketing firms and government offices.  The Center for Applied Management (WittCAM) provides consulting-type services to for-profit and non-profit organizations via student teams coached by business faculty.   Our newest hands-on venture is the creation of WittEntrepreneurs, in which students have the opportunity to work in and manage a business and even start their own business. All three programs provide rich experiences to apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations.

Preparation for certification and graduate studies:  There are different certifications depending on the career area of accounting that is chosen.  For example, those who choose a job in industry may pursue the Certified Management Accountant exam, those who take jobs with corporations may take the Certified Internal Auditor exam and others may pursue the Certified Fraud Examiner exam.  The accounting major meets the educational requirements.

The one certification that requires study beyond the bachelor’s level is that of Certified Public Accountant. To take the CPA exam, most states require students to complete 150 semester hours, which is above and beyond the graduation requirements at Wittenberg.  Some of our students take the additional hours as undergraduates; others complete a master’s degree (in accountancy or business administration) upon graduation from Wittenberg.  Recently, our graduates have continued their studies at universities such as Ohio State, Notre Dame, Case Western, Virginia and Texas, to name a few.

Our graduates are working across the country in a variety of settings.  Students are successful in finding employment with businesses and accounting firms every year—evidence that our program gives students the skills and experience that employers are seeking.
