Tigers Take Fifth to Cap Off Strong Spring

Jackie Stevens
GAMBIER, Ohio - Capping off a season to remember, the Wittenberg women's tennis team claimed a pair of wins and a fifth-place finish in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championships at Kenyon College. Opening up the day, Wittenberg stormed by Earlham 5-0, before topping Ohio Wesleyan 5-1 in the fifth-place match.

Sophomore Jayne Miely (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) provided the singles point that put the Tigers past the Quakers in the first match. Miely did not drop a game, before only losing one in her singles match against Ohio Wesleyan's top flight.

Freshman Jackie Stevens (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) paired with Miely in an easy 8-1 win over the Bishops second flight doubles team. Later, Stevens returned to dispatch her opponent in No. 5 singles. Junior Sean Delaney (Powell, Ohio/Worthington Christian) also garnered a point for the Tigers at sixth flight singles.

Rounding out the winners on the day for Wittenberg, freshman Maggie Stewart (Bay Village, Ohio/Magnificat) and junior Emily Nash (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) won the third tier doubles point over Wesleyan by an 8-4 score.

The Tigers sent off their two seniors Kat Sundstrom (Trafalgar, Ind./North Central) and Allison Earhart (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) with a historic season. With a 15-5 record, Head Coach Justin Stuckey's team matched the winningest season in school history, tying the 15 wins posted by the 1992-93 team. The Tigers also enjoyed the best winning percentage of any Wittenberg team since the institution joined the NCAC in 1989-90.
