Tigers Open NCAC Play With Win Over Ohio Wesleyan

Marisa Pechawer
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers both kicked off the 2007-08 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) schedule and wrapped up the fall portion of the campaign with a 7-2 road win over Ohio Wesleyan.

The win moved Wittenberg to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC. Match action resumes in February with a small number of indoor matches and March when the team heads south for its annual Spring Break trip. Schedule details will be released soon.

The key for the Tigers were matching singles and doubles sweeps from junior Allison Earhart (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) and sophomore Marisa Pechawer (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central). Earhart was a comfortable winner at No. 1 singles - in the match that turned out to be the clincher - and No. 2 doubles with sophomore Emily Nash (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson). Pechawer came up with a singles win at No. 5 and a doubles win at No. 3 with junior Kat Sundstrom (Trafalgar, Ind./North Central).

Freshmen Jayne Miely (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Elizabeth Michelleti (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West)added wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles respectively. Freshman Amanda Sweeney (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) rounded things out with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewashing at the No. 6 singles spot.

According to Head Coach Pablo Russo, the fall season was extremely successful as several young players stood out in their first few weeks of collegiate tennis, while Earhart came up with a fine performance to lead the Tigers past the No. 3 team in the NCAC a year ago.
