Wittenberg Competes Well At ITA Midwest Regional

Allison Earhart
GREENCASTLE, Ind. - Despite having no finals appearances at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional competition, the Tiger women's tennis team played hard against nationally recognized teams, putting some bounce in the step of Pablo Russo, men's and women's tennis head coach.

After a bye, freshman Jayne Miely (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) lost in the second round to nationally ranked DePauw's Janelle Arita, who went to be the runner-up in the singles competition. "She played like a senior," said Russo following the match, which was Miely's first ITA.

Standing out over the weekend was junior Allison Earhart (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown), who put together an impressive run into the third round of the singles draw, putting up a tough fight in the two sets against a freshman from Denison's perennially competitive roster.

In doubles play, Wittenberg was well represented. In backdraw competition, the freshmen combo of Hillary Rechel (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) and Elizabeth Shively (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) won their first match and received a bye before bowing out to an Albion duo.

Freshman Rachel Bundy (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and sophomore Emily Nash (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) teamed up, earning a main draw first round win, but lost in the second round to a Chicago pair. Miely and Earhart also participated in the doubles play as teammates, advancing to the second round where they lost to a team from Baldwin-Wallace.
