Calvin Ties Capital, Advances On Penalty Kicks
Friday, Nov. 9, 5 p.m.

Calvin's Julianna Litts and Capital's Natasha Ballard battle for the ball
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Calvin Knights got the better of things through most of the 110 minutes of game action against Capital University, but it took a penalty kick shootout to finally move the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletics Association champion on to the second round of the 2007 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament.

The game officially ended in a 0-0 tie, but Calvin will play a second round game against the Wittenberg Tigers at 6 p.m. Saturday, also at Wittenberg's Edwards-Maurer Field. The Knights made all five of their penalty shots, while Capital made three of four (did not attempt No. 5 because result was clinched). Capital ended its season with a 14-5-2 overall record, while Calvin moves on with a 15-3-3 mark.

The Knights held a commanding 15-5 edge in shots in the game, including seven that went on goal. However, Crusader goalkeeper Linley Vermillion was up to the task, recording seven saves until the shootout.

At the other end of the field, Calvin goalkeeper Kayla Sulzer took over in net at halftime and played 65 outstanding minutes. Then in the shootout, Sulzer came up with a save on the first attempt for Capital, by Sherry Lyle, to give her team a chance to close it out.

Successful penalty kicks for Calvin were recorded by Emily Otterhoff, Leah Schotten, Ashley Bolen, Julianna Litts and Carly Prins, while Capital countered with goals by Sarah Hagan, Natasha Ballard and Molly Sheils.
