1998 Season Preview

Young Wittenberg Lacrosse Team Looks To Challenge the NCAC Leaders in 1998

Wittenberg University's women's lacrosse team is gearing up for a great season, ready to meet and surpass its own mark for excellence set in 1996 after three single season records-the most victories and the most All-North Coast Athletic Conference selections since 1990.

While the Tigers will lose standouts Jodi Ahnmark and Kerry Greiser to graduation, eleven first-year students join, ready to make a strong impact and an immediate contribution. Although young, the Tigers will not lack for experience. Senior Hillary Richardson (Herndon, Va./Herndon) and sophomore Tina Novitski (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) will lead the offense. Novitski, the team's second leading scorer, brought home 16 goals and three assists for 19 points, while Richardson followed closely with 11 goals and six assists for 17 points. Sophomore Kelly Busch (Chagrin Falls, O./Andrews) will add to the offensive output of the squad.

Goalkeeper Kate Cushman (Worhtington, O./Thomas Worthington) dominated in the net last season with 279 saves for an average of 17.4 and a save percentage of .534. Also challenging for goal tending duties will be senior Grethen Wagner (Chardon, O./Berkshire). The defense will be anchored by sophomore Kim Miller (Mechanicsburg, O./Mechanicsburg). Miller, the most improved player last year, was the team's ground ball leader with 65.

Wittenberg continues to look to the rest of the sophomore class, Nicki Herd (Sunbury, O./Big Walnut) and Carrie Horwitz (Balto, Md./Towson) for speed, quickness and leadership in the midfield.

The 1998 Tigers have the potential for an outstanding season. They step up to the challenge of improving on last year's seventh place finish and aim to finish in the top four of the tough NCAC.
