Junior Abi Gerstle (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont), the first female
runner in school history to ever qualify for the NCAA Division III Championship
Meet a year ago, made a return trip to the biggest meet of the year last
week. Running amongest a loaded, 213-athlete field at Augustana College in
Rock Island, Ill., Gerstle improved upon her 2000 finish, crossing the line
in 108th place with a time of 18:37, which was less than two second behind
her personal best time recorded a week earlier at the Great Lakes Regional
Championship Meet.
The fine NCAA finish capped an outstanding season for the junior
co-captain. Gerstle became the first Wittenberg runner to win an individual
North Coast Athletic Conference championship, and she followed that with
a strong finish and personal best time at the regional meet. She led the
Tigers in every meet in which she competed this season.

All season, the Wittenberg cross country team has been paced by junior
Abi Gerstle (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont), the first female runner in
school history to ever qualify for the NCAA Division III championship meet
a year ago. Two weeks after becoming the first Tiger runner to win an individual
NCAC title, Gerstle bettered her personal best time to finish 9th overall
at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet at Kalamazoo College with a time
of 18:35. |
| Gerstle's finish earned her the fourth individual qualifying slot and
led the Tigers to a 17th-place finish in the 33-team field. The NCAA Division
III championship meet is scheduled for Nov. 17 at Augustana College in
Rock Island, Ill.
Gerstle was followed by senior Sarah Weide (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead),
who had a strong run of her own, just two seconds off her personal best.
Weide, who made All-NCAC for the first time in her career in 2001, finished
35th in a time of 19:17.
The other Wittenberg runner who turned in a personal best time and a
top-100 finish was freshman Vanessa Tilton (Camden, Ohio/Twin Valley
South), who turned in a 19:45, good for 64th.
On the men's side, Wittenberg wound up 24th in a 32-team field. Junior

Gerstle and Weide |
The Tigers may not have taken part in any competition over the weekend, but they remained busy. Just a few short days remain before the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet at Kalamazoo College.
For most of the hundreds of runners taking part in the men's and women's competitions, the regional meet will be one last hurrah in the 2001 season. The Tigers, in particular junior Abi Gerstle (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) and senior Sarah Weide (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead), have high hopes of making a strong impression at the meet and possibly moving on to the NCAA Division III National Championship meet on Nov. 17 at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill.
Gerstle is trying to make the national meet for the second straight year after she became the first Tiger runner to win an individual NCAC title and Runner of the Year honors. Gerstle, who was the first Wittenberg runner to make the NCAA meet a year ago, crossed the finish line at the Oct. 27 NCAC meet in 19:09.45, more than seven seconds faster than anyone else in the field. |
Weide turned in a career-best seventh in a time of 19:41 at the NCAC meet. That finish was good for first-team All-NCAC honors, the first time Weide has earned such an award in cross country after taking home second-team honors the last two years.
On the men's side, senior Dave Hyde (Naperville, Ill./Central) leads a team that must lower its times significantly to qualify for the national meet. The tri-captain has paced the Tigers in every meet this season.

Wayne, Ind./Homestead), who was a career-best seventh in a time of 19:41. That finish was good for first-team All-NCAC honors, the first time Weide has earned such an award in cross country after taking home second-team honors the last two years. |
On the men's side, senior Dave Hyde (Naperville, Ill./Central) led the team again, this time finishing 21st in a time of 27:33, which was good for honorable mention All-NCAC honors. Hyde's finish was the brightest spot for the Tigers, who wound eighth in the 10-team field.

The Tigers didn't compete last week, instead taking advantage of some downtime to prepare for the upcoming North Coast Athletic Conference Championships on Oct. 27 at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind.
On the women's side, Wittenberg is led by junior co-captain Abi Gerstle (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont), an All-NCAC cross country and track athlete a year ago who is attempting to become the first Wittenberg runner to qualify for the national meet twice in her career. Gerstle, the top finisher in last year's meet who is returning to the field in 2001, has been followed closely by senior co-captain Sarah Weide (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead), a second-team All-NCAC qualifier a year ago. Freshman Vanessa Tilton (Camden, Ohio/Twin Valley South) and sophomore Becky Barnes (Williamsport, Ohio/Williamsport) have consistently run strong behind Gerstle and Weide. |
On the men's side, senior Dave Hyde (Naperville, Ill./Central) has led the team all season and is in search of his first all-conference finish this weekend. Junior Nick Dewald (Mansfield, Ohio/Senior) is the Tigers' top returning runner after he made second-team All-NCAC in 2000. Also in the Tigers' top five this year have been senior Luke Clarkson (Bascom, Ohio/Hopewell-Louden), senior Scott Huntoon (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and sophomore Tim Damopoulous (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City).
