Wittenberg Sweeps NCAC Foe Ohio Wesleyan

Sarah Matesich
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers continued their march through the 2007 schedule, taking three straight games against North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) foe Ohio Wesleyan.

By scores of 30-20, 30-11, 30-23, Wittenberg improved to 15-0 overall and 3-0 in the NCAC. Second-ranked Wittenberg is one of just three teams in all of NCAA Division III to stand undefeated through the first three weeks of 2007 competition.

The Tigers win with a combination of ball control defense and diversified offense, and Wednesday's home game was no exception. The defense was sparked by junior libero Laura Fender (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula) with 21 digs, while senior outside hitter Emily Bell (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) added 17 digs.

The offense featured another outstanding performance from senior outside hitter Jan Kehres (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) with 10 kills and an efficient stat line for junior middle hitter Jessica Kimble (Dennison, Ohio/Claymont) with eight kills and no errors on 14 attempts. That translates to a stellar .571 attack percentage.

Rounding things out, the play of setters Sarah Matesich (Granville, Ohio/Newark Catholic), a senior, and Kendall Obreza (Gainesville, Fla./Oak Hall), a sophomore, should be noted. The duo combined for 33 assists, including a team-high 17 from Matesich.
