Press Release: Thirty Wittenberg Student-Athletes Claim Spring Sport North Coast Athletic Conference Postseason Awards

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — A solid spring sports season has reaped individual rewards for 30 Wittenberg University athletes who were selected to All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) teams over the last two weeks. Announcements for men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's tennis, softball and baseball have come in separate releases from the NCAC office. Tigers Top Nationally Ranked Transylvania

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Wittenberg Tigers tuned up for the 2006 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament with a 5-4 win over Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season champion Transylvani on Wednesday. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but torrential rains in Kentucky early in the day made the Pioneers' field unplayable. To accommodate Transylvania's Senior Day festivities, the Tigers agreed to make the trip on Wednesday instead, but the two teams played just one game. Read More ... |

Tigers Gain NCAC Tournament Berth With Doubleheader Sweep Of Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers completed an unlikely rally Saturday, sweeping a pair of games from Oberlin College by scores of 7-0 and 12-1 to reach the four-team North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. Wittenberg, which has won five of its last six games over an eight-day span, finished in a three-way tie for third place in the NCAC regular season standings and will be the No. 4 seed in the tournament by virtue of tiebreaker criteria.

HIRAM, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers had the upper hand, but they couldn't close the deal on Saturday, settling for a doubleheader split at Hiram. In winning Game 1 by a 3-1 score and losing Game 2 by a matching 3-1 tally, the Tigers are now backed into a corner with one week left in the 2006 regular season.

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - They did it the hard way, but when the dust had settled on a cool spring afternoon at Betty Dillahunt Field the Wittenberg Tigers had themselves a doubleheader sweep over visiting Allegheny. The Tigers, needing desperately to bounce back after losing a pair against Ohio Wesleyan to open North Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, captured a pair of one-run victories against the Gators by 5-4 and 3-2 counts.

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers got their North Coast Athletic Conference season off to a rocky start Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep against one of the top teams in the preseason poll, Ohio Wesleyan. The Battling Bishops banged out an 8-2 victory in the opener and then stunned the Tigers with a three-run rally in the seventh inning to capture a 4-3 win in the nightcap.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Wittenberg freshman Rachael Hatcher (West Carrollton, OH/West Carrollton) picked up her fifth and sixth wins of the season in 2-0 shutout against Mt. Saint Joseph and a 4-3 win over Albion. She went the distance in both contests. In the shutout over Mt. Saint Joseph, she allowed four hits and struck out three. SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers needed a win in the worst way. They got their money's worth at home Wednesday in a doubleheader sweep of Mount St. Joseph, claiming victories by scores of 2-0 and 3-2.
The most encouraging part about the victories is the way the Tigers gained them. Wittenberg is not an offensive juggernaut, meaning the Tigers need to pitch well and play good defense to give an opportunistic offense a chance to win games.

As a team, the Tigers are now batting a paltry .226 as a team on the 2006 season after falling twice to Alma, 7-2 and 3-0. Wittenberg is now 6-8 on the season after losing four straight games in two days upon their return from a Spring Break trip to Kissimmee, Fla.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Wittenberg Tigers put the finishing touches on their annual Spring Break trip with a split of two games at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Fla. Wittenberg lost to seventh-ranked Washington University. 4-1, before ending the trip on a positive note with a 9-1 victory over Manhattanville.

Wittenberg Splits Pair On Day 4 Of Spring Break Trip

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - In a study of contrasts, the Wittenberg Tigers were blown out by nationally ranked Muskingum, 18-0 in five innings, and then came back a few hours later to defeat Eastern Mennonnite by a 4-1 score.
Muskingum, ranked fourth nationally, scored at least one run in each of its four at-bats as the game was shortened to five innings due to the run rule. That included an eight-spot in the second inning. Read More ... |

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Wittenberg Tigers opened the 2006 season with a pair of close games, coming away with a split. The Tigers defeated the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 3-1, before losing to the College Misericordia, 3-2.
