Athletics Hall of Honor


Constitution
Adopted in Oct. 1984 and amended Dec. 1986, Nov. 1988, April 1992, March 1993, April 1999, Feb. 2000 and March 2001.
ARTICLE I
Purpose
Recognizing the value of athletics to Wittenberg University and the American way of life, this Athletics Hall of Honor is established to perpetuate the memory of those individuals who have made lasting and significant contributions to the institution's intercollegiate athletic program.
ARTICLE II
Criteria for Nomination
Any individual of good character who has given outstanding performance in athletic competition at Wittenberg shall be eligible for nomination ten years after the graduation of his or her class. Persons who have not qualified for a degree, but left the University in good standing, may be nominated. Nominees may also include coaches, managers, trainers, and other persons who have made outstanding contributions to intercollegiate athletics at Wittenberg. An individual may be nominated posthumously. No member of the Athletics Hall of Honor Committee nominated shall be eligible for consideration during his or her term on the committee.
ARTICLE III
Hall of Athletic Honor Committee
This committee shall be chosen initially by the ad hoc founding group and thereafter by the committee itself.
The permanent committee shall include the Director of Athletics and Recreation, Senior Women's Administrator, Director of Alumni and Constituent Relations, Representative from the Sports Information Office, three members-at-large with at least ten years' identification with Wittenberg athletics and nine members in staggered three-year terms. Initially one member-at-large shall be elected for a one-year tearm, one for a two-year term and one for a three-year term. Members-at-large selected after the first year shall serve terms of three years. Permanent members and members-at-large may designate representatives to function on the committee in their absence. Faculty representatives to the NCAA may be ex-officio members. The Hall of Athletic Honor Committee shall also include nine individuals nominated by the six persons listed above. On the initial committee, three members shall be elected for a one-year term, three members for a two-year term and three members for a three-year term. Individuals selected after the first year shall serve a term of three years. Terms of office shall begin at the second meeting following induction of the current class of honorees.
Individuals elected after the first two years should include at least two members of the Hall of Athletic Honor. Should any member resign or otherwise become ineligible during a term, a replacement shall be elected by the committee of the whole. A committee member may be elected for additional terms.
The chair of the committee shall be elected by the group. Such person as designated by the chair shall serve as secretary and keep all records.
The Hall of Athletic Honor Committee shall meet three times a year. In order for the committee to conduct business, two-thirds of the committee must be present. A February meeting will be held to review constitution and fill vacancies, etc. A March meeting will be held as a selection meeting. A pre-homecoming meeting will be held as a final preparation meeting. At the first meeting, nominations for recognition received before that date shall be reviewed, vacancies on the committee filled and any committees needed for special taks shall be named. One such committee shall be responsible for compiling the list of nominees with details concerning their accomplishments to prepare for voting at the next meeting. Another shall be one to work with representatives of the University, the Alumni Association, Athletic Department, Varsity W and Tiger Paws to plan procedures for induction ceremonies.
In March, nominees shall voted on by ballot and arrangements for induction and awarding of honors reviewed. In special circumstances, this requirement may be waived by a two-thirds affirmative vote of quorum.
At a meeting immediately following, or soon after inductions for the year, the committee shall select its chair for the following year, review the constitution, seek to resolve any problems relating to nominations, presentations and induction, and determine the committee membership for the next year. A quorum of two-thirds (eight) of the voting members of the committee must be present to conduct any committee business.
ARTICLE IV
Nominations
Calls for nomination shall be made in appropriate issues of Wittenberg Magazine, Wittenberg Torch, Wittenberg web site (www.wittenberg.edu), University sports newsletters and also in the local newspaper. Such cals should include the criteria for a nomination.
Nominations may be made by anyone, and individuals not selected shall continue on the list for consideration. Nominations must be made in writing, include supporting evidence of the nominee's qualifying accomplishments and be received in the Office of the Director of Alumni and Constituency Relations.
ARTICLE V
Inductions
For each of the first two years, the number of inductees shall be limited to 12, not more than four of them posthumously. In subsequent years, the number of inductees shall be limited to four, not more than two of them posthumously. At least one of the four inductees must have graduated or served 50 or more years previous. In selecting honorees, consideration shall at all times be given to representatives of all intercollegiate sports. Inductions shall be held as a feature of an occasion sponsored jointly by the university and alumni association recognizing members of all sports teams.
ARTICLE VI
Recognition
Each inductee shall receive an attractive memento, inscribed with an appropriate symbol, his or her name, year of induction, sport(s), and social class year.
Names of inductees, along with information about their contributions to intercollegiate athletics of Wittenberg, shall be permanently displayed in an appropriate area of areas of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Building.
The Hall of Athletic Honor Committee shall request the Alumni Association to make available to the University Library a Hall of Athletic Honor Book of Recognition that may be seen by interested individuals and to provide an appropriate permanent listing of honorees in a suitable location.
ARTICLE VII
Amendments
The constitution may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the members of the Hall of Athletic Honor Committee being present.
Amendments may be made each year provided members have been provided copies of the proposed amendments at least two weeks prior to meeting.
