The Wittenberg men's and women's track and field teams performed to the best of their abilities last weekend at the 2005 North Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships at Ohio Wesleyan. The Tiger men placed third, while the women's team finished seventh.

The story of the meet, from a Wittenberg perspective, was senior Joe Rumschlag (Maumee, Ohio/Toledo Christian), who was named NCAC Outdoor Field Events Athlete of the Year for his exploits. He earned All-NCAC recognition by virtue of a top-three finish in seven different events, five individual and two as a member of relays. Now with more than 20 All-NCAC designations to his credit, Rumschlag also was the NCAC Indoor Field Events Athlete of the Year in 2004 and 2005.

Rumschlag earned All-NCAC honors with a third place finish in the 100 meters, second in the 200 meters, first in the long jump, first in the triple jump and first in the decathlon. In addition, Rumschlag ran the third leg on the 400-meter relay and the 1600-meter relay, both of which placed second.

Individually, the Tiger men had four other all-conference performances turned in during the outdoor meet. Freshman David Emrath (Elsmere, Ky./Lloyd) placed third in the 400 meters for his first career all-conference designation, freshman Mike Echols (Springfield, Ohio/North) took third in the 800 meters, sophomore Andy Karcher (Oceola, Ohio/Bucyrus Wynford) placed third in the hammer and sophomore Mark O'Brien (Shavertown, Pa./Dallas Senior) took third place in the decathlon, good for his first all-conference award.

In the relay events, Wittenberg's men placed second in both the 1600- and 400-meter events. In the 400-meter relay, junior David Bazzel (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe), junior Gregg Carter (Wellsville, Ohio/Wellsville), Rumschlag and Emrath teamed up for the All-NCAC finish. In the 1600-meter relay, Emrath, Echols, Rumschlag and senior Chad Kresser (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay) comprised the all-conference quartet for the Tigers.

On the women's side, the team leader was precocious freshman Nicole Bailey (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day), who earned three All-NCAC honors at the 2005 Indoor Championships. Bailey placed second in the 100 meters, third in the long jump and second in the triple jump, all of which were good for all-conference designations.

The only other All-NCAC honor was earned by freshman Allison Walker (Columbus, Ohio/Academy), who placed third in the hammer throw.

The Wittenberg men's and women's track and field teams are heading into the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship meet with a great deal of momentum, created by strong finishes by several Tiger athletes in the decathlon and heptathlon events hosted by Wittenberg last weekend.

Battling through the elements - rain, snow, high winds, cold temperatures - was no problem for senior Joe Rumschlag (Maumee, Ohio/Toledo Christian), who earned his first conference decathlon title after finishing second a year ago. He continues an amazing run of success in the event - four Wittenberg athletes have won the last seven NCAC decathlon titles (Josh Guerreri in 1999, 2000 and 2001; Brian Gehle in 2002; Tim Gaal in 2003 and 2004; Joe Rumschlag in 2005).

Wittenberg athletes took three of the top four places in the decathlon, giving the Tigers 21 points toward the conference championship standings. Sophomore Mark O'Brien (Shavertown, Pa./Dallas Senior) finished third and senior Chad Kresser (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay) took fourth.

In the heptathlon, Wittenberg picked up seventh and eighth-place finishes from junior Anna Finkelstein (Whitehall, Mich./Reeths-Puffer) and freshman Alissa Goble (Sunfield, Mich./Lakewood) respectively. It was the first collegiate heptathlon for each.

The rest of the team was supposed to compete at the Wilmington Invitational, but that event was cancelled due to the strange weather. It was the second meet of the spring called off due to freak snowstorms this year.

The Tigers are back in action Friday and Saturday in the NCAC Championships. Wittenberg placed fourth in the indoor men's competition and seventh in the indoor women's competition in early March.

Andy Karcher

The Wittenberg mens and womens track and field teams are heading into the home stretch with some outstanding individual performances highlighting things.

Leading the charge is senior Joe Rumschlag (Maumee, Ohio/Toledo Christian), who has his first NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark in the long jump. He has surpassed the mark in each of the last two meets, at Rhodes on April 9 and at the All-Ohio Invitational at Ohio Wesleyan on April 16, and he is currently ranked in the top 10 nationally.

His performance at Rhodes, which included three top-five finishes, earned Rumschlag NCAC Field Events Athlete of the Week honors.

Sophomore Andy Karcher (Oceola, Ohio/Bucyrus Wynford) has also been competing at a high level for the Tigers. He had multiple top-five finishes at Rhodes and then he followed that up with third place in the hammer throw at Ohio Wesleyan, which was good for NCAC Field Events Athlete of the Week.

On the womens side, the story continues to be freshmen Nicole Bailey (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) and Allison Walker (Columbus, Ohio/Academy). At Rhodes, Walker finished first in the hammer throw and in the top five in two other field events. At Ohio Wesleyan, Bailey placed fourth in three different events and was the top NCAC performer in each case.

While the NCAC Championships dont technically take place until next week at Ohio Wesleyan, they do start this weekend with the decathon and heptathlon championships hosted by Wittenberg. A Wittenberg athlete has won the decathlon in each of the last five years and Geri Woessner, class of 2004, won three of the last four heptathlon titles. The rest of the team competes at the Wilmington Invitational on Saturday.

The Wittenberg men's and women's track and field teams have moved outdoors and have turned in solid performances at meets at the University of Cincinnati and the University of Indianapolis. Then last weekend, the Wittenberg Challenge Decathlon was completed in terrible weather, although the Ohio State Relays were called off due to snowfall in Columbus.

At the Bearcat Relays at Cincinnati, the Tigers' best finishers were freshman David Emrath (Lloyd, Ky./Elsmere) with a fourth place in the 400 meters and a sixth place in the high jump, sophomore Andy Karcher (Oceola, Ohio/Bucyrus Wynford) with a fourth in the hammer and sixth in the shot put, and freshman Nicole Bailey (Cincinati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) with a fourth place in the long jump, seventh in the 100 meters and second in the triple jump.

In the Jerry England Invitational at Indianapolis on March 26, the Tiger men placed fourth in a 10-team field and the women took fifth in an 8-team field as junior Anna Finkelstein (Whitehall, Mich./Reeths-Puffer) and freshman Mike Echols (Springfield, Ohio/North) swept the 800 meter events; Karcher scored and freshman Allison Walker (Columbus, Ohio/Academy) scored in three field events apiece and sophomore Mark O'Brien (Shavertown, Pa./Dallas Senior) won the javelin with a career-best throw of more than 160 feet.

Bailey and Walker were honored by the North Coast Athletic Conference on March 28 with Athlete of the Week honors for their performances in the first two outdoor meets.

Rounding things out, 12 hearty sportsmen braved tough weather conditions in the Wittenberg Challenge, and the top Tiger finisher was O'Brien in fifth place.

The Tigers have their longest road trip of the 2005 season this weekend with a journey to Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. It is the first of three straight weekend meets that will serve as the final tune-ups for the 2005 North Coast Athletic Conference championship meet April 29-30 at Ohio Wesleyan University.

The Wittenberg men's and women's indoor track and field teams finished fourth and seventh respectively in the March 4-5 North Coast Athletic Conference indoor championship meet.

For the men, the highlights were primarily provided by senior Joe Rumschlag (Maumee, Ohio/Toledo Christian), who was named Indoor Field Events Athlete of the Year for the second time, fitting nicely alongside hardware claimed as the Outdoor Field Events Athlete of the Year in 2003.

Rumschlag took All-NCAC honors with second-place finishes in the 200 meters and the triple jump and a first-place in the long jump for the third straight year, which brings his remarkable record to five conference titles in the long jump (three indoor and two outdoor). In addition, Rumschlag was a member of the second-place 800-meter relay and the third-place 1600-meter relay.

Now with a remarkable 23 All-NCAC honors between indoor and outdoor championships, Rumschlag was the only member of the Tiger men's team to earn an individual all-conference designation in the indoor meet. He was joined on the relay events by junior Gregg Carter (Wellsville, Ohio/Wellsville), freshman Sean Gouch (Columbus, Ohio/Mifflin) and senior Lamarr Lewis (Trotwood, Ohio/Madison) in the 800-meter relay and freshman Mike Echols (Springfield, Ohio/North), Gouch and Lewis in the 1600-meter relay.

On the women's side, freshman Nicole Bailey (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) was simply outstanding in her first conference championship event, taking first place in two events and second in another. She wound up just barely on the outside looking in at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships, ranking in the top 20 nationally in the 55-meter dash with a provisional qualifying time of 7.31, which is also a school record. She was not among the competitors selected for the meet, however.

Bailey earned a trio of all-conference honors as she finished second in the triple jump, first in the long jump and first in the 55 meters. In addition, freshman Michelle Kyle (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) reached All-NCAC status with a third-place finish in the high jump.

Now it's on to the outdoor portion of the 2005 season, starting with a meet this weekend at the University of Cincinnati.

The Wittenberg men's and women's indoor track and field teams have come to the biggest point of the 2005 season with what Head Coach Steve Shutt hopes is a head of steam.

At last weekend's Anderson Invitational, the Tigers women finished sixth of 11 teams and the Tiger men took fifth of nine. While the team finishes were middle-of-the-pack, several high-quality individual finishes stood out.

Leading the charge for the women was freshman Nicole Bailey (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) set a school record and also shattered the meet and Anderson Indoor Fieldhouse record with a winning time of 7.31 in the 55 meters. That was good for an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time, the 10th best in the nation heading into the final weekend of regular season competition.

On the men's side, the 800-meter relay of freshman Sean Gouch (Columbus, Ohio/Mifflin), junior Gregg Carter (Wellsville, Ohio/Wellsville), freshman David Emrath (Elsmere, Ky./Lloyd) and senior Joe Rumschlag (Maumee, Ohio/Toledo Christian) set a school record with a time of 1:31.75 to place second in the meet and freshman Mike Echols (Springfield, Ohio/North) set a school record in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:18.06, which placed him fifth in a strong field.

The Tigers are at Denison for the NCAC Championships Friday and Saturday. The NCAA Division III Championship meet is next weekend at Illinois Wesleyan University.

The Wittenberg men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed well last week at the Ohio State University Scarlet and Gray Invitational. No team scores were kept.

On the men's side, junior Gregg Carter (Wellsville,Ohio/Wellsville) and senior Joe Rumschlag (Maumee, Ohio/Toledo Christian) competed in the 200 meters at OSU. Carter had a season-best time of 23.08, and he and Rumschlag are currently ranked first and second in the conference in this event.

Carter also recorded a personal-best time in the 55 meters at Ohio State with a preliminary time of 6.65. He went on to place 11th in the final with a time of 6.63.

Other top individual finishes were turned in by freshman Mike Echols (Springfield, Ohio/North), who recorded his personal-best time in the 1600 meters and finished fourth in 4:39.99, and sophomore Andy Karcher (Oceola, Ohio/Bucyrus Wynford), who recorded personal-best throws in the shot put and weight throw events.

Rounding things out, the 1600-meter relay of Rumschlag, freshman Sean Gouch (Columbus, Ohio/Mifflin), senior Lamarr Lewis (Trotwood, Ohio/ Madison) and Echols finished third for Wittenberg.

For the women, freshman Nicole Bailey (Cincinnati,Ohio/Summit Country Day) was again the story as she placed 10th in the 55 meters in 7.47. She also recorded a season-best mark in the long jump at 16-0.5, good for fourth place.

In addition, freshman Allison Walker (Columbus, Ohio/Academy) and junior Michele Gardner (Bellvue, Ohio/Norwalk St. Paul) both recorded personal-best throws in weight throw event, and junior Anna Finkelstein (Whitehall, Mich./Reeths-Puffer) placed 13th in the 200 meters with a time of 28.51 and 14th in the 400 meters in 1:03.50.

The team has one final tune-up as it prepares for the NCAC Championships March 4-5 at Denison. That comes this Saturday at Anderson College in Indiana.

The Wittenberg men's and women's indoor track and field teams continued to turn in solid finishes against quality competition the last two weekends, including meets at Cedarville, Capital and Ohio Northern, the last being the prestigious and well-attended All-Ohio Indoor Invitational.

On Feb. 4, the Tiger men finished third and the Tiger women placed fourth at the Cedarville Invitational, despite competing against a field made up primarily of scholarship programs.

Leading the men was senior Joe Rumschlag (Maumee, Ohio/ Toledo Christian) as he finished first in the triple jump, third in the long jump and fourth in the 200 meters. The men's mark was aided when the 1600-meter relay team also took first place with a showing of 3:32.60.

In addition, freshman Mike Echols (Springfield, Ohio/North) finished third in the 800 meters.

The women received a particularly strong showing from freshman Allison Walker (Columbus, Ohio/Academy), who had an impressive showing in the weight throw with a second-place finish. In the 800 meters, juniors Anna Finklestein (Whitehall, Mich./ Reeths Puffer) and Rebecca Stewart (Knoxville, Tenn./The Webb School) took third and fourth in a closely contested race.

On Feb. 11 both the men and the women traveled to Capital University for the Purple and White Invitational. The Tiger men took second place out of 11 teams, and the Tiger women finished fourth in a 10-team field.

The men were led by first-place finishes by senior Lamarr Lewis (Trotwood, Ohio/Madison) in the 400-meter dash and by junior Gregg Carter (Wellsville, Ohio/Wellsville) in the long jump. Carter and Lewis also took second and third respectively in the 200-meter dash. Carter was honored by the North Coast Athletic Conference with Athlete of the Week, Sprints/Hurdles, on Feb. 13.

The women were led by freshman Chastity Sandridge (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid), who placed second in the 55-meter dash, Finklestein, who took fourth in the 400, freshman Alissa Goble (Sunfield, Mich./Lakewood), who was third in the 1500 meters, and sophomore Jessica McClish (Shelby, Ohio/Shelby), who placed third in the high jump.

Rounding things out, freshman Nicole Bailey (Cincinnati,Ohio/ Summit Country Day) had her best day yet as a collegian as she took first place in the 55 meters at the All-Ohio meet in a school record time of 7.43. She also tied the meet record, and she went on to add a second-place finish in the triple jump, a week after claiming third place in the event at Cedarville.

On the men's side, Rumschlag was the top scorer as he placed fifth in the long jump and eighth in the triple jump. Overall, the men were 14th of 19 at the All-Ohio Invitational and the women were 10th.

Next up is a trip to Columbus for a meet at Ohio State on Saturday. The team is competing in some of the toughest events possible as it gears up for the NCAC Championships March 4-5 at Denison.

The Wittenberg men's and women's indoor track and field teams got off to decent starts to the 2005 season in the last two weekends, including a pair of fifth-place finishes at the Marietta Invitational on Jan. 22 and deceiving finishes of fifth and seventh at the North Coast Athletic Conference Relays on Jan. 29 at Denison.

The results at the NCAC Relays were deceptive because the teams were without several key performers due to injury or illness, and then the men's 800-meter relay was botched on the final leg with a dropped baton despite a big lead. Still, a lot of young athletes got their first taste of collegiate competition and made the most of it.

At Marietta, the men were led by senior Joe Rumschlag (Maumee, Ohio/Toledo Christian), who finished in the top three in three different events, freshman D.J. Hlovchiec (Loveland, Ohio/Cincinnati Moeller), who was second in the pole vault with a mark that just missed the school record, and freshman David Emrath (Elsmere, Ky./Lloyd), who was first in the 500 meters.

At the NCAC Relays, Rumschlag had the best finish with the best triple jump in the competition. He was also part of the second-place long jump relay with sophomore Gregg Carter (Wellsville, Ohio/Wellsville). Two other relays finished second as well: the sprint medley with Carter, Rumschlag, Emrath and freshman Sean Gouch (Columbus, Ohio/Mifflin) and the 1600-meter relay with Rumschlag, Emrath, Gouch and junior Chad Kresser (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay).

On the women's side, freshman Nicole Bailey (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) was the top finisher at the Marietta Invitational as she placed third in the 55 meters and second in the 200 meters. At the NCAC Relays, the team's top finish was produced by the members of the shot put relay as freshman Allison Walker (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Academy) and junior Michele Gardner (Bellevue, Ohio/Norwalk St. Paul) took third place.

The Wittenberg men's and women's indoor track and field teams open up the 2005 season with a meet at Marietta College on Saturday. It will be the first competition for a team now missing many of its top performers from recent years but still with high expectations.

The men's team is coping with the graduation losses of Skip Ivery, one of just three NCAA track champions in Wittenberg history, and Tim Gaal, a three-time national qualifier and a two-time North Coast Athletic Conference Field Events Athlete of the Year, among several other personnel departures. The women's team is without graduated Geri Woessner, an all-conference performer in three sports during her Wittenberg career and the school and NCAC record-holder in the heptathlon, and middle distance specialist Kelly Zilli, who holds several school records and reached the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in the 800 meters a year ago.

All that said, the cupboard, as always, is hardly bare. With about a dozen returning letterwinners among both the men and women, both teams have high hopes they will once again be in the mix for the conference championships - indoor in early March and outdoor in early May.

The Tiger men are led in 2005 by senior Joe Rumschlag (Maumee, Ohio/Toledo Christian), an all-conference performer in each of his first three seasons in the Red & White and also a standout wide receiver for the football team last fall. Already the owner of several school records, Rumschlag will be a factor in the decathlon, sprints and jumping events, and he is aiming for his first berth in the NCAA Division III meet.

In the sprints, Rumschlag will have plenty of quality company, starting with a pair of returners in sophomore Gregg Carter (Wellsville, Ohio/Wellsville) and junior David Bazzel (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe). Among the most prominent newcomers are senior LaMarr Lewis (Trotwood, Ohio/Madison), who has battled injuries in his career but appears healthy and ready to go in 2005, and freshman Sean Gouch (Columbus, Ohio/Mifflin).

In the hurdles, junior Tom Smith (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) is the lone accomplished returnee. Among the athletes expected to excel in this discipline are senior Greer Illingworth (Irvine, Calif./University) and freshman Bobby Mansour (Mantua, Ohio/Crestwood).

In the jumps, Rumschlag, Carter and sophomore Tim Lovett (Jeffersonville, Ohio/Miami Trace) are the holdovers. They will be joined by freshmen Aaron Robinson (Monroeville, Ohio/Monroeville), David Emrath (Lloyd, Ky./Elsmere) and D.J. Hlovchiec (Loveland, Ohio/Moeller), all of whom excelled in high school and have established marks that should translate well to the next level. In addition, junior Chad Kresser (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay) will be involved in a variety of events for the Tigers and is expected to be a factor in the conference decathlon chase.

The throwing events will feature sophomore Andy Karcher (Oceola, Ohio/Bucyrus Wynford), junior Thomas Dillingham (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) and sophomore Glenn Taylor (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg). Karcher and Dillingham both lettered a year ago.

Finally, a strong group of freshmen are making the transition from cross country to track in 2005, and hopes are high that their dedication will pay off in the form of strong finishes. Leading the way is Mike Echols (Springfield, Ohio/North), the team's top cross country finisher all fall. He is joined by fellow first-year students David Wallingford (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue), Shawn Hils (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood), Mike Wismer (Avon, Ohio/Avon), Darren Stough (Frazeyburg, Ohio/River View) and Jon Dewald (Mansfield, Ohio/Senior), while junior Bill Childers (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) is also in the mix this year.

On the women's side, the returning athletes aren't quite as accomplished, but there is plenty of potential, starting with senior Tina Valerius (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) and sophomore Jessica McClish (Shelby, Ohio/Shelby), both of whom compete in sprints, hurdles and jumping events, and junior Anna Finkelstein (Whitehall, Mich./Reeths-Puffer), who hopes to pick up where Zilli left off in the middle distance events.

Freshmen Nicole Bailey (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) and Chastity Sandridge (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid) come in with high expectations in the sprints and hurdles. Bailey and freshman Michelle Kyle (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) are expected to also make an impact in jumps.

In the throwing events, sophomore Lisa Nicholls (North Bend, Ore./North Bend) earned All-NCAC honors a year ago and hopes to improve upon her marks this year. Junior Michele Gardner (Bellevue, Ohio/Norwalk St. Paul), who lettered as a freshman, and first-year students Allison Walker (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Academy) and Jennifer Graff (Middletown, Ohio/Madison) also will be counted on for production in 2005.

Rounding things out, the Tigers have a mix of experience and youth in the middle distance and distance events. Finklestein will be joined by sophomores Sarah Yehle (West Lafayette, Ind./West Lafayette) and Meredith Deitsch (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton) and freshmen Alissa Goble (Sunfield, Mich./Lakewood) and Mary Beth Lintz (Englewood, Ohio/Northmont). Lintz led the Tigers in all but one cross country event during the fall, and Goble was close on her heels.
