2001 Wittenberg Men's Lacrosse Press Releases
May 2, 2001 - The Tigers suffered a pair of losses last week, falling 19-4 to Ohio Wesleyan and 10-7 to Wooster. Wittenberg will finish fifth out of six teams in the NCAC in 2001. Sophomore attacker Zach Kulow (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) had three goals against Wooster while sophomore attacker Dan Patterson (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) had two goals and two assists and senior attacker Mario Cassani (Chesterfield, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) added three assists. Cassani ranks fourth in the NCAC in points (42) and goals (27). Patterson is sixth in assists (16) while senior midfielder Shawn Egan (Roswell, Ga./Innocent Episcopal) is seventh in goals (21).
April 24, 2001 - In their only game last week, the Tigers rolled to a 16-2 win over Marietta. Senior attacker Mario Cassani (Chesterfield, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) and sophomore attacker Zach Kulow (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) each had three goals. Sophomore attacker Dan Patterson (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) added five assists. Cassani is second in the NCAC in both points (39/4.33) and goals (27/3.0) while Patterson, who has 10 assists in his last three games, has moved up to third in the NCAC (16/1.78). The Tigers play their last two NCAC games this week, at home against Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday and at Wooster on Saturday. Wittenberg has no chance to win the conference title, but the Tigers can play spoiler against the Bishops, who lead the league with a 4-0 record. It will be the final time on Edwards-Maurer Field for the team's seven seniors - Shawn Egan (Roswell, Ga./Innocent Episcopal), Mario Cassani (Chesterfield, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit), Tim Schuckman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller), Scott Gilbert (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers College), Chris Gruber (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson), Andy Rathfon (Ft. Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin). Wittenberg's final game of the season is May 2 at Kenyon in a non-league affair.
April 18, 2001 - The Tigers split a pair of games last week, losing 13-12 to Kenyon in an NCAC game and defeating Wooster 17-9 in a non-league contest. Senior attacker Mario Cassani (Chesterfield, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) continued his outstanding season with five goals and six assists in the two games. He leads the NCAC in goals (24) and is second in points (35). Sophomore attacker Dan Patterson (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) had a good week with four goals and five assists, including a team-high three goals against Kenyon and four assists versus Wooster. In goal, the Tigers have gotten good play from sophomore Tripp Way (Wayne, Pa./Radner), who has been the primary starter. Also worth noting has been the play of junior Nate Reed (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller), who is winning more than 80 percent of his faceoffs this season, easily the best in the NCAC.
April 12, 2001 - The Tigers improved to .500 with a pair of wins
last week, defeating Wheeling Jesuit, 18-5, in non-league action on Wednesday
and then thumping Oberlin 23-8 in NCAC play on Sunday.
The Tigers play a pair of conference games this week, including one against Kenyon, which is averaging better than 16 goals a game, on Wednesday.
April 3, 2001 - The Tigers suffered a 14-7 loss to nationally ranked Denison on the road on March 27. Senior Mario Cassani (Chesterfield, Mo./DeSmet) led Wittenberg with four goals. Wittenberg will hit the road for a game at Wheeling Jesuit on Tuesday before returning to Edwards-Maurer Field to finally open the home portion of the 2001 schedule. The Tigers will host Oberlin on Saturday. It will be the Tigers' second match against Oberlin in three weeks after a 16-0 win on March 17.
Sophomore Zach Kulow (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster), who scored six goals against Oberlin and leads the NCAC in scoring early in the season, was named Player of the Week. The Tigers will need his offense even more this week when they take on nationally ranked NCAC rival Denison on Tuesday.
March 22, 2001 - After the Tigers lost both games on their Spring Break trip to Virginia two weeks ago, losing 10-1 to Marymount and 10-5 to Randolph Macon. Wittenberg rebounded to win its North Coast Athletic Conference opener on March 17 at Oberlin by a score of 16-0. Sophomore Zach Kulow (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) scored six goals, while senior Mario Cassani (Chesterfield, Mo./Desmet) added four tallies.
March 15, 2001 - The Tigers lost both games on their trip to Ashland, Va., losing 10-1 to Marymount, Va. and 10-5 to Randolph Macon. Junior midfielder Nate Reed (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) had two goals and one assist in the loss to Randolph Macon.
