May 2, 2000--
(18-16, 6-3 NCAC)-- The Tigers faced a difficult schedule, but posted a 3-2 record in last week's competition. Wittenberg opened the week with an 11-2 victory over conference opponent Denison to improve its conference mark to 6-3 in the West division. The Tigers faced Wooster in weekend action and split, falling 8-7 in game one of the twinbill but then posted a 4-3 decision in game two. On Sunday, Ohio Northern came to town and the Tigers won the first game 6-1 but fell in game two 8-6.

On the mound for the Tigers senior Cory Winfield (Marion, Ohio/Harding) had an impressive victory over Denison. Winfield threw nine strikeouts while walking only two batters and allowing only four hits.

Other leaders for the Tigers in last week's action were sophomore Ryan Born (Marion, Ohio/Pleasant) who hit a triple in the bottom of the seventh against Wooster to knock-in the game-winning run in a 4-3 victory. Born was two-for-two against Wooster with a triple and two runs batted in.

Leading the Tigers at the plate is sophomore shortshop Bryan Burke (Cleveland, Ohio/Brunswick) who is sixth in the conference with a .424 batting average. Junior Ryan Peters (London, Ohio/London) is is 12th in the NCAC with a .402 average.

Others ranked in the NCAC include Winfield who is sixth in strikeouts with 8.11 per game and Peters who is fourth in home runs with eight. Sophomores Burke and Lance Dill (Bellville, Ohio/Clear Fork) are first and second, respectively in doubles with 15 and 14.

In team stats in the conference, Wittenberg is fifth in batting average at .319 and fifth in ERA at 5.56.

Wittenberg travels to nearby Cedarville for non-conference action on Tuesday and then hosts conference division leader Ohio Wesleyan in a three-game series this weekend.


April 25, 2000--
(15-14, 5-3 NCAC)-- In last week's action, the Tigers completed only one game posting a 5-3 victory over nearby Wilmington College on Wednesday. Severe weather interrupted Thursday's game against Urbana in the third inning and Saturday's contest against Allegheny was also cancelled due to poor field conditions.

Leaders for the Tigers in the Wilmington contest were sophomore Karl Friedhoff (Sunman, Ind./East Central), junior Ryan Peters (London, Ohio/London), and sophomore Ryan Born (Marion, Ohio/Pleasant).Friedhoff was four-for-four, while Peters went three-for-three with an RBI and Born was two-for-four with a double.

Leading the Tigers at the plate is Peters, who is third in the NCAC with a .436 batting average. Peters is also fifth in the conference in home runs knocking in six so far this season. Ninth in the conference in batting is sophomore Bryan Burke (Cleveland, Ohio/Brunswick) with a .415 average. Burke is also tied with fellow teammate Lance Dill (Bellville, Ohio/Clear Fork) for conference leader in doubles with 13 or .45 per game.

In team stats in the conference, Wittenberg is fifth in batting average at .320 and sixth in ERA at 6.22.

The Tigers face Denison in a nine-inning make-up conference game on Tuesday and then host Wooster on Saturday and Ohio Northern on Sunday in doubleheaders.


April 18, 2000--
(14-14, 5-3 NCAC)-- The Tigers continued to find success in conference action last week, posting a 2-1 record in the three-game series against Earlham in weekend action. Earlier in the week, Wittenberg dropped an important 7-6 contest to Kenyon in a 10-inning contest.

Leading the Tigers in weekend action was junior Ryan Peters (London, Ohio/London) who hit his sixth home run of the season in the first game against Earlham. He finished the weekend with six hits and four runs batted in. Sophomore Bryan Burke (Cleveland, Ohio/Brunswick) hit his second home run of the season in the second game of the twinbill on Saturday where he finished two-for-four with six runs batted in. In Sunday's contest, sophomore Scott Hirsch (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) led the Tigers in the victory finishing four-for-five with a home run and three runs batted in.

Burke is leading the Tigers in batting with a .417 average and Peters is second with a .413 batting average. Burke is 10th in the conference in batting average with Peters ranked 13th in the NCAC. Sophomore Lance Dill (Bellville, Ohio/Clear Fork) and Burke are tied for the lead in the NCAC in doubles each with 13.

In team stats in the conference, Wittenberg is fifth in batting average at .316 and sixth in ERA at 6.50.

Wittenberg has a full week of non-conference action when Wilmington visits on Wednesday, nearby Urbana on Thursday and Allegheny on Saturday.


April 11, 2000--
(12-12, 3-2 NCAC)-- The Tigers hosted Denison in weekend conference action and posted a split decision in the twinbill on Sunday. Wittenberg won the first game 8-6, but fell in the afternoon contest 12-7. The third game of the three-game series was postponed due to weather and is rescheduled for Tuesday, April 25.

Leading the Tigers in weekend action was junior Ryan Peters (London, Ohio/London) who hit his fifth home run of the season in the second game against Denison. Contributing in the first game over Denison was sophomore Lance Dill (Bellville, Ohio/Clear Fork) who went two for three with a double and three runs batted in.

Sophomore Bryan Burke (Cleveland, Ohio/Brunswick) is leading the team in batting and is 11th in the conference with a .424 average. Peters is 14th in the NCAC with a .411 batting average.

Tied for second in the conference in doubles is Dill and Burke, each with 11 in 24 contests. Senior Cory Winfield (Marion, Ohio/Harding) is fifth in the NCAC in strikeouts with 8.5 a game.

The Tigers face a full week with action against Mt. St. Joseph on Tuesday, Kenyon on Wednesday and then conference opponent Earlham in a three-game weekend series.


April 4, 2000--
(11-11, 2-1 NCAC)-- Wittenberg opened its conference schedule in action last week when the Tigers traveled to new member Wabash for a three-game series. Wittenberg posted a 10-0 and 12-8 victories in the doubleheader last Saturday but fell in the nine-inning contest 4-2 on Sunday.

Leading the Tigers in weekend action was junior Ryan Peters (London, Ohio/London) who was 2-4 with two doubles and two RBI's in Saturday's contest and 3-4 in Sunday's game. Also contributing was senior Brian Davis (Newark, Ohio/Lakewood) who went 2-4 with a double and a two-run home run in the second game of the twinbill on Saturday.

Leading the Tigers in batting is Peters who is 14th in the conference with a .412 batting average. Second on the team is sophomore Bryan Burke (Cleveland, Ohio/Brunswick) with a .410 average.

Sophomore Lance Dill (Bellville, Ohio/Clear Fork) is leading the conference in doubles with .45 a game while Burke is third averaging .41 a game.

This week Wittenberg hosts conference opponent Denison in a three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday and a nine-inning game on Sunday.


March 27, 2000--
(9-10, 0-0 NCAC)-- The Tigers opened up their season with 10 games in five days during their annual trip to Fort Myers, Florida. Wittenberg walked away with five victories and five losses in the week to finish their trip with a 5-6 overall record after falling to nearby Cedarville College in the season opener.

Since the break the Tigers have posted four more victories and four more losses including wins over Walsh and John Carroll. Wittenberg hosted their own tournament last weekend and posted two more wins over Heidelberg and Urbana.

Top leaders for the Tigers at the beginning of the season include sophomores Bryan Burke (Cleveland, Ohio/Brunswick) and Lance Dill (Bellville, Ohio/Clear Fork). Burke is leading the team in batting with a .455 average and has recorded 30 hits and 13 runs in the first 19 games. Dill is third on the team in batting with a .364 average including 24 hits and 16 runs for the Tigers.

Also making an immediate impact for the Tigers is junior outfielder Ryan Peters(London, Ohio/London). Peters is second in batting with a .372 average and is the team leader in home runs knocking in four this season.

In action this week, the Tigers open their conference schedule with a doubleheader against Wabash on Saturday and a follow-up nine-inning Sunday contest.
