MARIETTA, Ohio - Marietta College, 2006 NCAA Division III national champions and winners of 30 games for four straight years, welcomed the visiting Wittenberg Tigers with a reception of hits. The Tigers dropped a 7-2 loss to the "Etta Express," allowing 13 hits and having trouble finding their offense.
while Wittenberg put up 11 hits, they had trouble producing runs and left nine hitters on base throughout the nine-inning game. Marietta held Wittenberg's big slugger, sophomore leftfielder Jeremey Fruhwirth (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) to 1-for-4 hitting on the day, though he still owns a .500 batting average on the season.
Producing the lone earned run for the Tigers was junior third baseman J.T. Thompson (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont), who singled up the middle in the fourth to drive home sophomore first baseman Chris Dorka (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington). Dorka himself went 2-for-3 from the plate, batting .422 for the year. Also batting 2-for-3 against the Pioneers was junior right fielder Patrick Williams (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield), and he improves to .412 while leading everyday players in slugging percentage at .676, though as a team the Tigers did not put up any extra base hits Sunday.
Junior pitcher Tim Antil (Brookville, Ohio/Northmont) started the game from the mound, going four innings and allowing eight hits, three runs (two earned), while walking two and striking out one. In relief, sophomore Bobby Ciucki (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) pitched the last four innings, giving up five hits, four runs (all earned), while walking one and striking out two. Antil drops to 2-2 on the season after being charged with the loss.
The Tigers have a busy week ahead, playing seven games in nine days, starting off with a nine-inning game at home versus Thomas More on Tuesday at 6 p.m., and followed immediately on Wednesday with a short trip over to the University of Dayton for a 4 p.m. game with the Flyers.
