Professor Impacts Student Lives After Graduation
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – A move to Mexico has not kept Wittenberg Professor Emeritus of Art Jack Osbun from connecting with his former students. Currently, Osbun shares an exhibit at The Gallery at Ambience in Springfield, Ohio, with Patrick Jewell, Wittenberg class of 1990, and Mary Jo McClain, Wittenberg class of 1993.
“It’s interesting how my students are developing,” said Osbun, who retired from Wittenberg in 2000 and now splits his residences between Springfield and Mexico. “If I had any influence on McClain and Jewell, they have moved beyond it and into an art style all their own. It’s an honor to have their work shown with mine.”
In addition to exhibiting with former students in art shows, Osbun has extended an open invitation to them to work with him in his studio in Mexico.
“I’m working primarily with Mexican themes right now,” Osbun said. “My current works are landscapes I see when I walk from my home to my studio.”
As a formalist, Osbun says the play of light and twilight on the walls behind his studio fascinates him, and he constantly experiments with natural and artificial light. He says he manipulates shapes and light whether he’s painting buildings in Mexico, religious icons or mermaids.
