Meet Erica Cartharn ’13
“Wittenberg is a place for individuals to find themselves by stepping outside of their comfort zones, engaging themselves in the Wittenberg and Springfield community, and challenging themselves beyond the capacities one would have ever imagined.”
Business has always been a passion for Erica Cartharn of Crete, Ill., and coming to Wittenberg has allowed the chance to take that passion and turn it into a path to success.
“I wanted to expand my knowledge in order to effectively enter into the business financial field upon graduation,” said Cartharn, who plans to join a financial services organization after Commencement in order to “build on my academic foundation and develop my financial expertise.”
As she prepares for such work, Cartharn feels confident that Wittenberg’s leadership-development opportunities will play a critical part in her future.
“Wittenberg has challenged me on an academic level as well as a personal level,” she said. “By participating in the Wittenberg traditions and engaging in the community, I was able to transform into the leader I always aspired to be.”
Wittenberg’s educational approach has also changed her forever.
“The liberal arts education has inspired me most during my time at Wittenberg,” she said. “Taking courses such as Philosophy of Women’s Lives has broadened my perspective on life and forced me to see pass the bubble I created for myself.”
Cartharn’s own transformation has since inspired her to share her passion for Wittenberg with everyone she meets.
“I will inform future students that Wittenberg is not a university for which to enroll and solely engage in the social life on campus or lock oneself in a room to study from day to night,” she said. “Students should enroll in Wittenberg for one reason and one reason only: to have a life-changing lifetime experience. I guarantee that if the right amount of effort is put forth, Wittenberg will be a place to call home.”
