Social/Cultural Activities

What follows is only a partial listing of social and cultural programs, events, and activities that are available to faculty and staff. Through both institutionally sponsored and informal programs, the Wittenberg community offers its faculty and staff many opportunities for personal and professional development. The list below represents one exciting set of those opportunities.

1. Women's Interest Groups

  • Feminist Reading Group. Meeting dates vary. Contact D'Arcy Fallon
  • Women's Caucus. Aims at achieving a unified voice regarding issues vital to women's lives on campus. Contact Mary Jo Zembar

2. Sports, Athletics, Recreation

  • Wednesday evening golf group. Weekly, coed; at Reid Park North Course, weekly at 5:00 p.m, contact Paul Parlato
  • Informal swimming group. With paid instructor. Contact Bill Higgins
  • Informal pick-up basketball group. MWF all year; 11:45 in HPER. Contact Cliff Brown
  • Wittenberg Triathlon. During Wittfest. Open to faculty and staff, their immediate family members, students, and alums. See website http://www4.wittenberg.edu/academics/mathcomp/andrews/misc/tri/. Or contact Chris Raffensperger
  • Committee to help John Loftis create a whitewater recreation area on Buck Creek. Contact Kent Dixon
  • Informal running/walking/biking group. Saturdays 8 a.m. Contact Ruth Lewis
  • Ballroom dancing lessons. Contact Brenda Baume

3. Social Activities and Events

  • Human Resources-sponsored activities. Contact Maureen Massaro:
  • --annual ice-cream social in July
    --end of summer picnic
    --President's coffees
    --Halloween coffee
    --Christmas Caroling
    --hourly staff Christmas Luncheon

  • Dining Excursions Group. Monthly trips to Columbus, Dayton ethnic restaurants. Contact Shelly Reynolds
  • Q and Q (Quest and Question). Annual faculty lecture, discussion, dinner. Contact Ty Buckman
  • Informal folk music group: “Stuffed Possum and Cornbread”. Meets at members' homes for dinner and playing of old time music. Contact Margaret Goodman
  • Wittenberg Women's Bridge group. Second Monday each month, 7-10 pm. Contact Ann Levy (399-9756) or Nancy Saks
  • Needlework Group meets twice a month, Sundays 2-4 pm. Contact Nancy Saks

4. Scholarly/Learning Occasions and Activities

  • FDB Workshops and lunches on a variety of topics throughout the year. Contact Ty Buckman

These take place every several weeks, throughout the school year, and are directed to improving all aspects of faculty life.

  • Works in Progress. Group meets monthly during the school year to read and critique scholarly works by faculty colleagues. Contact Tammy Proctor
  • Astronomy viewings and education. Occasional guided observations. Contact Dan Fleisch
  • Gardening Club. Once a month at noon-1, with speaker. Schedule at http://userpages.wittenberg.edu/kdennis/index.html. Contact Kathy Dennis
  • Symphonic Band, and Chamber Orchestra. Band meets 6:30-9 p.m. Wednesdays. Orchestra meets 7:30-9 p.m. Mondays. Contact Brandon Jones
  • Q & Q (Quest and Question). Annual faculty lecture, discussion, dinner. Contact Ty Buckman
  • Faith and Learning Reading Group. Meets once a month during school year to discuss, in parts, an important book. Contact Pastor Andy Tune or Fred Tiffany
  • Faculty opportunities abroad. Contact JoAnn Bennett
  • Kids' opportunities. Contact Barb Mackey

--Summer program for high achieving middle schoolers

--PSEOP (high schoolers taking college courses)

  • Crafters’ luncheons. Contact Pamela Deselem
  • 5. Community Engagement
  • To run for Springfield City boards or committees, contact Clerk of Commissions office at 324-7341

6. Cultural Enrichment

  • The Wittenberg Series. Lectures, shows, entertainments of the highest quality.
  • Multicultural Studies events. Contact Forest Wortham for upcoming events on campus and in the area.
  • Music Department recitals and events. Contact Department of Music for listings
  • Theatre and Dance performances. Contact Theatre and Dance Department for schedule.
  • Departmental colloquia. By Wittenberg faculty members and guest faculty. Contact department offices for upcoming sessions.
