
Special Interest in East Asian Business
Overview: The East Asian Business Fellowship Award program, offered through the University's East Asian Institute, provides unique opportunities to a select group of students to prepare them to succeed in today's global economy by engaging deeply with East Asian cultures and the professional world of international business and leadership. Fellows participate in a progressive four year experiential learning program to develop them as future global leaders.
Criteria: The East Asian Institute selectively offers a limited number of four-year scholarships to students who demonstrate a passion for East Asia and a strong interest in a career related to international business. Successful candidates must demonstrate a high school cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. A holistic approach will be used in evaluating other factors including foreign language study, international experience, and extracurricular involvement.
Amount: $2,500 per year or $10,000 over four years.
Criteria: Scholarships will be awarded to students who have maintained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or higher, Special Interest Award in Community Engagement demonstrate a sustained commitment to community service, take initiative and leadership roles in conjunction with their service and display an interest in key civic and urban issues through direct involvement in their community.
Amount: $2,500 per year or $10,000 over four years.
Guidelines: Students must submit the East Asian Business Fellow Application by January 15, a letter of recommendation from someone familiar with your interest in East Asia and international business and a personal essay that answers the following: Why are you interested in the Fellow program? What is your interest in East Asia? How do you think the Fellow program will help you develop as a future global leader? Finalists will be selected for an interview.
Expectations: East Asian Business Fellows serve as campus leaders who demonstrate a commitment to global citizenship, ethics and social responsibility. Within their academic program, Fellows take courses in economics and business as well as East Asian Studies and Chinese or Japanese language study that lead to a minor in East Asian Studies. Experiential learning includes internships and an enrichment program that includes mentoring, professional development activities, case studies, directed readings and a variety of campus engagement activities. Study abroad and internships abroad are encouraged. Fellows receive preference in applications for work-study at the East Asian Institute. If all expectations are met, the award is renewable annually based on maintaining a 3.0 GPA and good academic standing and conduct.
Mentoring: Fellows engage regularly with mentors to gain insights into global leadership, international business and career guidance. Mentors include Wittenberg alumni, working professionals and distinguished business leaders such as Executive in Residence, Mr. Toshikata Amino, retired executive vice president of Honda of America Manufacturing.
Internships: Internships are a core part of the Fellow experience. A unique progression of internships facilitates learning and career exploration, with internship opportunities available locally in Ohio, in Washington D.C. with the University's Washington Semester Program and abroad. Internships are available at organizations including:
- U.S. Department of Commerce
- U.S. Export Assistance Centers
- Ohio Department of Development Global Markets Division
- Member companies of the Miami Valley International Trade Association in southwestern Ohio
- Honda of America and its supplier network
- Corporations, NGOs, and government agencies
- U.S. Embassies and Consulates abroad
