Resident Advisor Position Description

Wittenberg University

Office of Residence Life

Resident Advisor Position Description

The residence hall experience at Wittenberg University provides opportunities for growth and development for the individual resident in an atmosphere of interaction and sharing. The Resident Advisor (RA) is important in establishing and maintaining this environment.

RA's are undergraduate staff members employed by the Office of Residence Life. Their overall responsibility is to provide leadership, assistance, and support to the students living in the residence halls. To this end, each RA serves in diverse roles with many different developmental and managerial responsibilities. Working in cooperation with the professional staff, the RA strives to facilitate and maximize the residence hall experience.

Portions of RA responsibilities are spontaneous and unscheduled, due to the nature of residence hall life. Each staff member must carefully organize time to meet the demands of course work, the RA position, and personal interests.

Resident Advisor Job Summary

The RA is a paraprofessional employment experience with the Office of Residence Life. The RA works directly with a floor or area of students to facilitate personal and community development, promote an appreciation of multiculturalism, and foster an environment conducive to academic success.

The RA's responsibilities include, but are not limited to: programming (5 per semester), assistance and support to residents, office hours (5 per week), assigned weekday and weekend duty nights, confrontation of inappropriate behavior, crisis management and referral, and assigned administrative tasks within the area of the residence hall and the Office of Residence Life. In addition to these duties, the RA is required to attend Fall and Spring Training, All Staff Meetings, and other training sessions throughout the academic year and during break periods.

The RA is required to have and maintain a 2.7 cumulative GPA. The RA is also expected to understand that the position is a work experience and takes precedence over other campus extra curricular activities and off campus employment. The Office of Residence Life views these campus extra curricular activities as important to the college experience and will try to be flexible with RA schedules when possible. The Office of Residence Life does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, religion, disability or sexual orientation.

Resident Advisor Remuneration

All RA's are provided a single room and local phone service and cable television. All RA's are given first priority for class registration.

In addition, first year RA's receive a $1500 work-study award. Returning RA's receive a $1700 work-study award and a $300 book voucher at the University Bookstore. The RA work-study award takes the place of all other work-study awards. No other on-campus employment is permitted. It is important that you consult with the Financial Aid Office to determine how the extra financial compensation will affect your financial aid package.
