This national society recognizes students who have achieved high academic distinction at Wittenberg. Phi Beta Kappa stresses the importance of the liberal arts and sciences and elects to membership only those students who have demonstrated their awareness of liberal arts tradition by building programs broad in scope yet sufficiently concentrated to ensure comprehensive knowledge in one or more disciplines. Students are normally elected as seniors or, in special cases, as juniors. They must major in one of the liberal arts or sciences, have a high grade-point average, have taken a variety of courses outside the major and have demonstrated a knowledge of mathematics and foreign language appropriate to a liberal arts education.
