Award-Winning Author Welcomed
Now in its 30th year, the Wittenberg Series annually brings distinguished lecturers and performing artists of national and international prominence to the Wittenberg campus and Springfield community. On Sept. 27, President Laurie M. Joyner welcomed American writer, poet and playwright Nick Flynn to campus during the Dr. Allen J. Koppenhaver Literary Lecture. The lecture, named for the longtime Wittenberg professor of English who passed away in 1993, is presented with appreciation for the life and inspiration of Koppenhaver through sponsorship by the Ellen, Lloyd, Margaret and Lanty Smith Endowed Fund for Wittenberg. In her remarks, Joyner shared a few words that Lanty Smith, Wittenberg class of 1964, shared during the inaugural Koppenhaver lecture in April 2011, in which he discussed the power of the student-professor relationship at Wittenberg.
