Off-Campus Tutor Program for Mathematics

The Wittenberg University Math Workshop also offers an off-campus tutoring program for mathematics as a service to the Springfield community.  In addition to tutoring high school math, we can also provide tutoring for other subjects such as chemistry and physics.  Tutors are available for any grade, K through 12, and providing tutoring service for elementary students is frequently requested.  Obed Lewis, the Director of the Math Workshop, administers the off-campus tutor program.

When a call comes in for a tutor, the Math Workshop receptionist will refer the call to the Director, Obed Lewis, or if unavailable, will take down the tutoring information.

The following information is recorded: Name of the caller, phone number, relationship to the one needing our service, name of the student, grade and name of the school, and subject to be tutored in (Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Calculus, Reading Comprehension, etc)

The rate is $12.00 per hour and is paid directly to the tutor at the time of the tutoring session.

An email is sent out to the Math Workshop employees to see if anyone of them would be interested in tutoring for the off-campus request. Depending on the subject requested for tutoring, an email is sent to those specific majors, such as math-majors@wittenberg.edu, phys-majors@wittenberg.edu, or educ-majors@wittenberg.edu. Typically students will return an email if they are interested in the tutoring opportunity and then with further correspondence, a determination is made as to whether it will be a good fit for both parties involved.  The tutoring information is passed onto the tutor at which time the tutor will call to set up the arrangements. Many times the tutoring sessions are conducted here on campus, typically in the library, but it can be wherever both parties agree is a comfortable setting. Generally the tutor will meet with both the parent and tutee initially so that instructions can be given to the tutor as to what the parent would like to accomplish through these one-on-one tutoring sessions.

If the situation does not work out, the parent can simply call back to the Math Workshop to make arrangements for a new tutor.

All records are kept on file by the Director.

If interested in finding a tutor for your K through 12 student, please contact Obed Lewis via telephone at 937-327-7041 or via e-mail at olewis@wittenberg.edu.
