Resources for Increasing Self-Awareness

Individual Career Consulting

We can assist you with discovering how your interests, skills, values, and personality relate to career fields as well as deciding upon a major. As a Wittenberg student, you are eligible to use our free assessment resources, which include the Campbell Interest & Skill Survey, Myers-Briggs Type Inventory, Values Card Sort, and FOCUS. When you seek career consultation, you may be encouraged to take one or more of these assessments. Click here for more information about these assessments.

Our society has become accustomed to quick results, and the downside of career assessments is they can lead people to believe that career planning is a science with easily measured results (i.e., you only need to take the right tests and then you'll know what your ideal career path is). In reality, the planning process is more like an art form. It can be compared to constructing a collage: As you learn about yourself by piecing together key experiences, the image of what you should pursue will become clearer to you. Through consultation, you will learn about recommended experiences and be able to discuss how those activities impact you. Therefore, it's important for you to start the career consultation process early on - we recommend starting your freshmen year.

Before your first appointment, we ask that you take a few minutes to start or update your Power Portfolio. This tool is a starting point for translating how your interests, abilities, and values relate to career options.

On-line Self-Assessments

These assessments are recommended because each can generally be completed in 15-20 minutes. Please be advised that you should regard all career tests as only "idea generators" - they cannot tell you what to do with your life. Because it can be difficult to integrate the results from these assessments, most students find it helpful to print their results and discuss them with one of the Career Center directors or their faculty advisor.
