Professor Arthur Lutz Memorial

DR. ARTHUR L. LUTZ 93, born on October 22, 1908 in Louisville, Ohio, died Thursday, August 22, 2002 in Springfield, Oakwood Village. He was raised on a farm with three brothers and one sister and spent the first eight years of schooling in a one room school house. He was a graduate from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, in 1931 with a Bachelors in Science, a Master in Physics in 1936 and Ph.D. in Physics in 1943 from the Ohio, State University.

In 1937 Dr. Lutz married Martha (Blohm), who survives him, along with two children, a son, Wendell (Nancy) Lutz of Tucson, Arizona and a daughter, Marcia Blust of Cincinnati, Ohio. Also surviving him are two grandchildren, Eric and Julie Blust and two brothers, Olen and Paul Lutz of Louisville, Ohio. He was preceded in death by a brother, Mervin and a sister, Pearl.

Dr. Lutz moved to Springfield in 1943 with his wife and joined the staff of Wittenberg University, where he was chairman of the Physics Department and remained there until retirement in 1975. He was devoted to Wittenberg and served in many capacities over the years. He felt very strongly that all students should have a clear understanding of the workings of the universe in order to call themselves college graduates. To that end he initiated a required course for all students call the ‘The Physical Universe' (dudded "PU" by the student body). His door was always open for all students.

Dr. Lutz had a lifelong devotion to Fourth Lutheran, now known as Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and served in all capacities. It was not unusual for him to fix the kitchen sink on Saturday and serve as guest minister on Sunday. After his retirement, Dr. Lutz and Martha started the New Dimensions group for seniors that focused’ on keeping seniors minds active as well as providing social activities.

Dr. Lutz was a member of the American Association of Physics Teachers, American Association of University Professors, American Physical Society, and the Ohio Academy of Science and the Literary Club. Dr. Lutz took great pride in everything he did, and deeply valued his numerous, lasting relationships with others. His body was entrusted to the WOODS-ALLGIER FUNERAL HOME where friends may call Sunday from 3-6 p.m. His body will lie in state one hour prior to the funeral services Monday at 10 a.m. in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with Rev. William McKee officiating. A family graveside committal will occur later Monday in Ferncliff Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests, that memorial contributions may be given to the "Arthur Lutz Scholarship Fund" at Wittenberg University or the memorial fund at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. As a tribute to the life of Dr. Lutz, use your time well, help someone who needs kindness, do the right thing even when it’s unpleasant, and never stop learning.
