Geology is the science that deals with the study of earth materials, such as minerals, rocks, fossils, or, water; earth processes, like tectonic plate movement, earthquakes, and streams; and earth history. Professional geologists, working in the energy or environmental industry, government, or education, explore a wide range of topics, including:
- past history and future behavior of earth systems, such as plate tectonic, hydrologic, or atmospheric systems, based on field observations, historical data, or modeling results;
- adequate supplies of natural resources, such as ground water, petroleum, and economic metals;
- soil conservation plans and watershed protection plans;
- human suffering and property loss from natural hazards and processes, such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods, landslides, and coastal erosion;
- human demand for natural resources and the impact resource development and extraction has on the natural environment; and
- global climate patterns and climate change.
