Summer College 2013 Dates -  Wednesday August 7 to Wednesday August 21

Overview

If you are an incoming First-Year Student who is excited about starting college and looking forward to moving into your residence hall and meeting new friends as soon as possible, Wittenberg’s Summer College Program is a great opportunity for you!  Summer College is a two week program, from August 7 – 21 and has many benefits, which include the opportunity to:

1.      Work with multiple award-winning professors who can serve as mentors at the start of the semester

2.      Engage with a small group of peers in an experience that includes hands-on learning and field experiences, including fun and exciting off-campus excursions.  Field experiences may include: a canoe trip, zip-line canopy tour, or an archeological excavation on Wittenberg's campus!  

3.      Get an early start to living on campus before the approximately 2,000 undergraduate students arrive on campus in the Fall.

4.      Earn two elective credits by taking 20 hours of instruction time, as well as receive guidance on how to manage time and ease the anxiety of beginning your first semester at college.

5.      Become intellectually and personally engaged in academic inquiry and understand the relationship between the world of learning and your own life

By the start of the fall semester you'll be well acquainted with the Wittenberg campus; you'll have gained confidence in meeting and talking with professors; and you'll have made a close-knit circle of friends with other first-year students.  Past participants contribute feeling better prepared for Wittenberg courses, enjoying greater academic and personal self-esteem, and benefiting from a lighter course load during the fall semester to the Summer College Program.

Information

Who can attend Summer College? Summer College is only available to incoming First-Year Wittenberg Students who will be enrolling in the Fall semester.  

When is it?  August 7 – 21 the two weeks before the start of New Student Days. 

Where will it be held?  All classes are held on Wittenberg’s campus but there are various excursions to local and not so local landmarks, exhibits, adventures and more!

Where will I live? All Summer College students live in one of the dorms on campus.

What is the cost of the program? The cost of Summer College is $1,000.  Some financial aid is available.  Please contact the Office of Undergraduate Affairs & Curriculum for more information. A non-refundable deposit of $100 is due at the time of registration to ensure your spot.  The balance is billed to your student account. 

Who leads the program?  Two of our award winning faculty members team teach each course.  Dr. Robert Davis & Dr. Margaret Goodman will team teach "Grace Under Pressure," while Dr. Darlene Brooks Hedstrom & Dr. Carmiele Wilkerson will team teach "Digging for Our Past."  

What courses will be offered? “Grace Under Pressure”: The Secrets of Survival AND Digging for Our Past

What is the schedule like? Classes will meet daily in the morning and generally wrap-up by noon.  There are occasionally afternoon or evening activities however.  The rest of the time you will be working on readings, homework and studying.  The building RA will also organize some activities for evening hours. 

How much work will there be? This is an intensive two credit course that is condensed into two weeks, so there is a good amount of work involved.  You should be prepared to do readings every night while also working on papers, presentations, and other homework assignments.
