It takes a special person to become the teacher who can truly make a difference. Our graduates seize the opportunities that a Wittenberg education provides to become that type of person. They are prepared to 
teach in the most challenging and most stimulating environments and have assumed positions in nearly every state across the country. Each course in our program has a field experience supervised by the instructor and developed to help our students progressively grow in skill and understanding. The courses and the field work prepare our teachers for the diverse environments they will find in their own classrooms whether it be in urban environments, in countries of service in the Peace Corps, or in remote locations - a year in a native Alaskan village or a year teaching English to Japanese youth.
Graduates of Wittenberg's teacher education program are unique. They graduate with the social purpose to advocate for their students and to work actively so that the conditions of their school, community and society are better places to live, learn and work.
The mission of the Education Department clearly states the goals we have for our students:
Wittenberg's Teacher Education Program strives to integrate the ideals of moral responsibility, social consciousness, and vocational commitment into the lives of teachers in such a way that their character, competence, and community involvement establish them as leaders for constructive social change.
We do not believe that there are formulas or easy answers when it comes to being a good teacher. For that reason we think that a liberal arts education is of great benefit. It prizes the intellectual agility that a teacher needs, and at Wittenberg, it also prizes the whole person including our developing capacities for service and compassion. Our mission and our approach to teaching and learning are realized through close relationships. In our program, students form close bonds with each other, with faculty, and with area practitioners. We want the Wittenberg-prepared teacher to feel confident that he or she can teach anywhere. We also want a Wittenberg teacher to have a lasting connection to this place no matter what school or what community enjoys the good service they have learned to provide.
