Equipment and Resources

The department is equipped with modern instrumentation for use in teaching labs and research.   The small class size at Wittenberg allows students to have lots of hands-on experience with this instrumentation.

Instrumentation in the department:

-Mettler Toledo DSC 1 differential scanning calorimeter

Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy

Many lab courses in the department rely upon UV-VS spectroscopy for the analysis of molecules in solution. In addition to simple absorption spectra, a temperature-controlled housing allows for the examination of kinetics data in biochemistry and inorganic chemistry.

Electrochemistry Workstation

Recent advances in electronics have revitalized electrochemical experiments for the analysis of various species in solution as well as being a sensitive probe of atomic and molecular environment. Professor Cline uses this instrument to study the effect of modifying the surface of carbon electrodes.

Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry

This $60,000 instrument allows both the separation of complex mixtures of molecules as well as the molecular weight and fragmentation analysis of each kind of molecule. This is the kind of instrument commonly used in a wide variety of analytical labs across the country including forensic analysis by the FBI and drug-screening at the Olympics.

Infrared Spectroscopy

IR spectroscopy is widely used in both organic and inorganic chemistry to examine the vibration of atoms within molecules. This kind of analysis is very diagnostic for the internal structure of the molecule.

Seminar Program

The seminar program in the chemistry department consists of student presentations, guest speakers from academe and industry and a variety of other types of meetings. The seminar program makes a significant contribution toward your professional development as a chemist. The weekly meetings also provide an opportunity for students and faculty to gather for announcements and to create a sense of community in the department. Visiting speakers from graduate programs and industry will help you learn more about opportunities available to you upon graduation from Wittenberg.
