Intro to Marine Biology at the Beach 2009

General Information

What is this course??

This course will fulfill the Natural Science with Lab requirement of the General Education program at Wittenberg.  It is designed to give non-majors an appreciation for the general processes of biology in a marine context.  It will be held at the Duke University Marine Laboratory (DUML).  This setting allows students to experience the marine environment as they learn about it.

Where is this Duke Marine Lab anyway??

DUML is located in Beaufort, North Carolina, at the southern end of the Outer Banks.  The lab is located on Pivers Island, a small island between Morehead City and Beaufort.  Nearby beach communities include Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle.  Beaufort itself is a small tourist town, located on the Intracoastal Waterway.  It is about 3 hours southeast of Raleigh, 1.5 hours north of Wilmington and 1 hour east of New Bern.

Who is teaching the course??

Drs. Kathy Reinsel and Jim Welch of the Biology Department at Wittenberg.  They both received their PhDs from Duke, and did their research at the Duke Marine Laboratory.  They typically spend their summers doing research at DUML

So what's a typical day??

Generally, we'll have some lecture time each day, sometimes both morning and afternoon, for about an hour at a time.  Some days we'll have field trips for part of the day, others for the whole day.  Other days we'll be collecting stuff to look at in lab, or working with stuff we've already collected.  Expect to be in class/lab, etc from about 9 (sometimes earlier, depending on tides) until 4 or so, with breaks during the day for lunch, etc.  Occasionally we'll need to look at something at night or on a weekend day, depending on the tides and what we're covering.  We'll give you plenty of warning for these activities.
